Kano State Chapter

The Save the Next Generation (STNG) Big Walk campaign was held on 20 June 2026, in Kano State at Bayero University Kano (Old Site) and Yankaji Bus Stop, Brigade. Organised by Meyiwa Vera Empowerment Foundation in partnership with Jamie Pagoel International, Kano State Chapter, the campaign's major focus was to educate a new generation and communities about sickle cell disease, genotype testing, and how to prevent, diagnose sickle cell, and make healthy decisions that take into account genotype information.

At Bayero University Kano's site, a programme featuring an educational symposium was scheduled to provide participants with a knowledge update on sickle cell, genotype compatibility, prevention and diagnosis including genotype testing with the chance to question and clear common misunderstandings. Meanwhile, volunteers carried out outreach activities at Yankaji Bus Stop to directly reach out to the community on the importance and role of genotype testing, sickle cell prevention and health decisions of the family.

More than 172 people participated at both venues, and many more were reached through photos, videos, media coverage, and social media platforms. Volunteers proved high quality of teamwork and enthusiasm from start to finish while media exposure helped spread the campaign message wider than the event itself. All in all, the STNG Big Walk at Kano combined a high level of institutional education with community engagement to raise awareness on sickle cell and encourage people to get tested for their genotype to have a better understanding of their health when making decisions about their lifestyles and relationships.
